AI-suggested

Red Hat has released an official security update for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 that fixes this vulnerability. Users should apply the update as described in Red Hat advisory RHSA-2026:84595 and the referenced article https://access.redhat.com/articles/11258. No additional mitigation steps are required beyond applying the vendor-provided patch.

Description

A race condition vulnerability in cockpit-files allows a local unprivileged attacker to exploit directory creation with owner assignment. By controlling a writable parent directory, the attacker can replace a newly created directory with a symbolic link before the ownership change is applied, redirecting ownership changes to arbitrary files. This can lead to information disclosure or unauthorized modification of sensitive files. Red Hat has issued a security update for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 to address this issue.
