Description

A flaw was found in libarchive. On 32-bit systems, an integer overflow vulnerability exists in the zisofs block pointer allocation logic. A remote attacker can exploit this by providing a specially crafted ISO9660 image, which can lead to a heap buffer overflow. This could potentially allow for arbitrary code execution on the affected system.

Technical Analysis

An integer overflow vulnerability exists in libarchive's zisofs block pointer allocation logic on 32-bit systems. A remote attacker can exploit this by providing a specially crafted ISO9660 image, causing a heap buffer overflow that may allow arbitrary code execution. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2026-5121 with a CVSS 3.1 score of 9.8 (critical). Red Hat has released security updates for libarchive in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 to mitigate this issue.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability can lead to arbitrary code execution on affected 32-bit systems due to a heap buffer overflow triggered by processing malicious ISO9660 images. The CVSS score of 9.8 reflects high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

Red Hat has released official security updates for libarchive in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 and related variants. Applying these vendor-provided patches is the recommended remediation. Users should consult Red Hat advisories RHSA-2026:8510 and RHSA-2026:10065 for detailed update instructions. No additional mitigation steps are indicated by the vendor.
