Description

A vulnerability in libtirpc allows a remote attacker to cause a denial of service by sending specially crafted PMAPPROC_DUMP replies to a client using the pmap_getmaps() function. This leads to unbounded decoding, resulting in excessive memory and CPU usage and crashing the client process.

Technical Analysis

The libtirpc library contains a flaw where a remote attacker can exploit the PMAPPROC_DUMP replies sent to a client application that uses the pmap_getmaps() function. By crafting these replies maliciously, the attacker triggers unbounded decoding in the client, causing excessive resource consumption (memory and CPU). This resource exhaustion results in a denial of service (DoS) condition for the client process.

Potential Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability results in a denial of service (DoS) due to resource exhaustion on the client side. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity, only availability is affected.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. No official fix or patch links are provided at this time. Until a patch is available, users should consider limiting exposure to untrusted RPC servers or avoid using the vulnerable function against untrusted hosts.
