Description

A vulnerability in nfs-utils' fsidd daemon allows a local user to cause a denial of service by sending malformed input over the local domain socket. The daemon relies on program assertions to verify command arguments, and a malformed request lacking required arguments triggers an assertion failure, crashing the daemon and disrupting filesystem identifier lookup services until restarted.

Technical Analysis

The fsidd daemon in nfs-utils improperly handles input received over its local domain socket by relying on program assertions to validate command arguments. A local attacker can exploit this by sending a malformed request missing required arguments, causing an assertion failure that crashes the daemon. This results in a denial of service affecting filesystem identifier lookup services until the daemon is manually restarted.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability leads to a denial of service condition by crashing the fsidd daemon, which disrupts filesystem identifier lookup services. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity, only availability is affected.

Mitigation Recommendations

No patch or official fix information is currently available. Users should monitor vendor advisories for updates. Until a fix is released, restarting the fsidd daemon after a crash is required to restore service. Restricting local user access to the fsidd daemon's socket may reduce risk.
