Description

A vulnerability in SSSD allows a local attacker to cause a denial of service by sending a specially crafted request with an invalid packet length to the autofs responder UNIX socket. This triggers an integer underflow and an out-of-bounds memory read, crashing the responder process. The issue affects multiple specific versions of SSSD and has a medium severity rating with a CVSS score of 5.5.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-104037 describes a flaw in SSSD where a local attacker can exploit the autofs responder UNIX socket by sending a specially crafted request containing an invalid packet length. This leads to an integer underflow and an out-of-bounds memory read, resulting in the crash of the responder process and causing a denial of service condition. The vulnerability requires local access and does not impact confidentiality or integrity, only availability.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability causes a denial of service by crashing the autofs responder process within SSSD. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity. The attacker must have local privileges to exploit this issue.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, restrict local access to the autofs responder UNIX socket to trusted users only to reduce risk.
