Description
A vulnerability in sssd allows a local attacker to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) by sending a specially crafted PAM request when passkey authentication is enabled. The flaw is due to a missing state validation check in passkey Kerberos handling, leading to dereferencing an uninitialized pointer and crashing the PAM responder, disrupting authentication services on the host.

Technical Analysis
CVE-2026-104044 describes a local denial of service vulnerability in sssd triggered by a specially crafted Pluggable Authentication Module (PAM) request when passkey authentication is enabled. The underlying issue is a missing state validation check in the passkey Kerberos handling code, which causes the PAM responder to dereference an uninitialized pointer and crash. This crash results in disruption of authentication services on the affected host.
Potential Impact
The vulnerability allows a local attacker to disrupt authentication services by causing the PAM responder to crash, resulting in a denial of service condition. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity reported.
Mitigation Recommendations
Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, restrict local access to trusted users and monitor for unusual PAM activity if possible.
