Description

A vulnerability in the sssd NSS responder allows a local attacker to cause an out-of-bounds read by sending specially crafted service lookup requests to the NSS responder's UNIX socket. This can lead to a denial of service (DoS) by crashing the NSS responder process. There is no evidence of privilege escalation or data disclosure. The issue affects multiple specific versions of sssd.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-90463 is an input validation flaw in the sssd NSS responder. A local attacker can send crafted service lookup requests to the NSS responder's UNIX socket, triggering an out-of-bounds read. This vulnerability can cause the NSS responder process to crash, resulting in a denial of service. The vulnerability does not allow privilege escalation or reliable data disclosure. The affected versions are explicitly enumerated and include various 1.x and 2.x sssd versions.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows local attackers to cause a denial of service by crashing the NSS responder process through an out-of-bounds read. There is no indication of privilege escalation or data leakage from this flaw.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, restrict access to the NSS responder's UNIX socket to trusted users only to mitigate potential exploitation.
