AI-suggested

Red Hat has issued an important security advisory (RHSA-2026:42946) addressing this vulnerability with updated packages for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 and related variants. Users should apply the official patches provided by Red Hat as detailed in the advisory at https://access.redhat.com/articles/11258. Since this is a local privilege escalation requiring root execution of the authorized_key task, applying the update mitigates the risk. No additional vendor mitigation instructions are provided.

Description

A local privilege escalation vulnerability exists in the ansible.posix authorized_key module due to improper handling of symbolic links and file ownership changes. An unprivileged local user can exploit this flaw by pre-staging symbolic links in their ~/.ssh directory, causing ownership changes to affect arbitrary system paths when the authorized_key task is run as root. This can lead to escalation of privileges on the affected system.
