Description

A vulnerability in the PDF file format parser of ClamAV allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to cause a denial-of-service (DoS) condition due to improper boundary checks leading to out-of-bounds buffer reads. This memory corruption issue can terminate the ClamAV scanning process when a crafted PDF file is scanned.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-20346 is a high-severity vulnerability in ClamAV's PDF parser caused by improper boundary checks during PDF content scanning. This flaw can be exploited by submitting a maliciously crafted PDF file to ClamAV, triggering an out-of-bounds buffer read that results in memory corruption. The primary impact is a denial-of-service condition where the scanning process crashes. No evidence of confidentiality or integrity impact is indicated. The vulnerability does not require authentication and can be triggered remotely.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation results in a denial-of-service condition by crashing the ClamAV scanning process. There is no confirmed impact on confidentiality or integrity. The vulnerability affects availability of the scanning service on the affected device.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, consider restricting or validating PDF files submitted for scanning to reduce exposure to crafted malicious PDFs.
