AI-suggested

A patch is available in aws-sam-cli version 1.138.0 which includes the fixed setuptools version. Users should upgrade to version 1.138.0 or later to remediate this vulnerability. No additional mitigation steps are required if the upgrade is applied.

Description

A path traversal vulnerability in setuptools' PackageIndex.download function allows an attacker to write files arbitrarily on the filesystem. This flaw exists due to insufficient sanitization of URL-derived filenames, enabling os.path.join to be bypassed. The vulnerability affects aws-sam-cli versions from 1.107.0 up to but not including 1.138.0. A fix is available in version 1.138.0. Exploitation could lead to arbitrary file writes with the permissions of the running process, potentially escalating to remote code execution depending on context.
