AI-suggested

A patch is available in setuptools version 1.163.0_1 that normalizes both the filesystem paths and MANIFEST.in patterns to a canonical Unicode form before matching, preventing exclusion bypass. Users should upgrade to this fixed version. Until then, maintainers should be aware that MANIFEST.in exclusions are normalization-insensitive on macOS and consider erring on the side of excluding more files. No other immediate action is required.

Description

A Unicode normalization mismatch in setuptools causes MANIFEST.in exclusion rules to fail on macOS APFS/HFS+ filesystems. When building source distributions, excluded files with non-ASCII names may be included if their on-disk Unicode form (NFD) differs from the pattern form (NFC). This leads to unintended disclosure of files intended to be excluded from published packages.
