Description

Axios versions before 0.33.0 have an incomplete depth-limit bypass vulnerability in the toFormData.js module. This occurs when serializing objects with top-level keys ending in '{}'. An attacker controlling object keys and nested values passed to axios form or parameter serialization can trigger a RangeError via JSON.stringify, leading to denial of service in the affected request path.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in axios prior to version 0.33.0 involves an incomplete depth-limit bypass in the toFormData.js serialization logic. Specifically, when objects with top-level keys ending in '{}' are serialized, attackers who can control these keys and nested values may cause JSON.stringify to throw a RangeError. This results in a denial of service condition affecting the request path that uses axios for form or parameter serialization.

Potential Impact

An attacker able to influence object keys and nested values passed to axios serialization can cause a RangeError exception, leading to denial of service for the affected request. There is no indication of privilege escalation, data disclosure, or code execution from the provided data.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, avoid passing untrusted or attacker-controlled objects with keys ending in '{}' to axios form or parameter serialization to reduce risk of denial of service.
