Description

Axios versions 0.28.0 and later have a vulnerability involving uncontrolled recursion in the formDataToJSON function when processing FormData field names with deeply nested bracket segments. An attacker can craft FormData with field names containing thousands of nested brackets, causing a JavaScript call stack overflow and triggering a RangeError. This results in request failure or process termination if the application does not handle the exception properly.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in axios starting from version 0.28.0 arises from uncontrolled recursion in the formDataToJSON function. When processing FormData field names that contain deeply nested bracket segments, the recursion depth can grow excessively, exhausting the JavaScript call stack. This leads to a RangeError that can cause the request to fail or the entire process to terminate if the exception is unhandled. This is classified as a resource exhaustion issue (CWE-400). No known exploits are reported in the wild, and no patch or remediation guidance is currently available.

Potential Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability can cause denial of service by exhausting the JavaScript call stack, resulting in request failures or process crashes in applications using vulnerable axios versions. There is no indication of privilege escalation or data compromise from the provided information.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, applications should implement exception handling around axios requests to gracefully manage potential RangeErrors caused by deeply nested FormData field names.
