Description

Brocade Fabric versions before 9.2.2d and from 10.0.0 through 10.0.0a1 contain a vulnerability in the handling of specific download protocols. Unsanitized parameter strings are used to construct system command strings executed by the firmware management daemon. This allows an attacker with elevated privileges to execute arbitrary shell commands due to lack of input sanitization on fields such as host or file path.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in Brocade Fabric firmware affects versions prior to 9.2.2d and versions 10.0.0 through 10.0.0a1. It arises from the processing of upgrade requests where parameters are converted into system command strings executed via a system shell interface. Because control characters and shell metacharacters in parameters are not sanitized, an attacker can inject arbitrary shell commands. This leads to command injection with the privileges of the firmware management daemon, posing a significant risk of unauthorized code execution.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an attacker with access to the upgrade request interface to execute arbitrary shell commands with elevated privileges of the firmware management daemon. This can lead to full compromise of the affected device's firmware environment, potentially enabling persistent control or disruption of device operations.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, restrict access to the upgrade request interface to trusted administrators only and monitor for suspicious activity related to firmware management. Avoid processing upgrade requests from untrusted sources.
