Description

A Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) vulnerability in Kibana allows a user with permission to create visualizations to save a malicious Vega visualization. When another user opens this visualization, it triggers authenticated requests in the context of the viewing user's session, potentially leading to privilege escalation. This affects Kibana versions from 8.19.0 up to but not including 8.19.20, and from 9.0.0 up to but not including 9.4.5. A patch is available to address this issue.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-72658 is a Cross-Site Request Forgery vulnerability in Kibana that enables privilege escalation. Specifically, a user authorized to create visualizations can craft a Vega visualization that, when viewed by another user, causes authenticated requests to be executed under the viewer's session. This can lead to unauthorized actions being performed with the privileges of the viewing user. The vulnerability affects Kibana versions >=8.19.0 <8.19.20 and >=9.0.0 <9.4.5. A fix has been released to mitigate this issue.

Potential Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability could allow an attacker to escalate privileges by tricking users into opening malicious visualizations, causing actions to be performed with their authenticated session. This could lead to unauthorized changes or access within Kibana depending on the privileges of the affected user.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available for this vulnerability. Users should upgrade Kibana to versions 8.19.20 or later, or 9.4.5 or later, where the issue is fixed. Applying these updates will mitigate the risk of privilege escalation via this CSRF vulnerability.
