What to do

AI-suggested

  1. Immediate mitigation should include restricting network access to the affected web server, limiting exposure to trusted networks only.
  2. Implement web application firewall (WAF) rules to detect and block requests containing suspicious path traversal patterns, such as '/../' or absolute file paths in the 'file' parameter.
  3. If possible, disable or restrict the /cgi-bin/display endpoint until a patch or update is available.
  4. Monitor server logs for unusual access patterns or attempts to access sensitive files.
  5. Engage with the vendor to obtain patches or updated firmware addressing this vulnerability.
  6. Conduct a thorough audit of affected systems to identify any signs of compromise or data exfiltration.
  7. Employ network segmentation to isolate critical devices running this web server from general user networks.
  8. Educate security teams about this vulnerability to ensure rapid detection and response.
  9. Consider deploying intrusion detection systems (IDS) tuned to detect exploitation attempts targeting CWE-22 path traversal vulnerabilities.
  10. Review and harden file system permissions to minimize the impact of unauthorized file reads.

Description

INOTEC Sicherheitstechnik WebServer CPS220/64 3.3.19 allows a remote attacker to read arbitrary files via absolute path traversal, such as with the /cgi-bin/display?file=/etc/passwd URI.
