Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Palo Alto Networks
Product: PAN-OS

Description

A packet processing mechanism in Palo Alto Networks PAN-OS software enables a remote attacker to reboot hardware-based firewalls. Repeated attacks eventually cause the firewall to enter maintenance mode, which requires manual intervention to bring the firewall back online. This affects the following hardware firewall models: - PA-5400 Series firewalls - PA-7000 Series firewalls

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability (CVE-2024-3385) in Palo Alto Networks PAN-OS arises from improper input validation (CWE-20) in the packet processing mechanism of certain hardware firewalls. An unauthenticated remote attacker can exploit this flaw to cause a denial of service by rebooting the firewall. Continued exploitation leads to the device entering maintenance mode, which requires manual recovery. The issue affects PA-5400 and PA-7000 Series firewalls running specified PAN-OS versions. The CVSS 3.1 base score is 7.5, reflecting network attack vector, low complexity, no privileges or user interaction required, and an impact limited to availability (denial of service). No patch or vendor remediation level has been published yet.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation results in denial of service by remotely rebooting the firewall hardware. Repeated attacks cause the firewall to enter maintenance mode, disrupting network security operations and requiring manual intervention to restore functionality. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity reported.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the Palo Alto Networks vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, monitor for unusual reboot activity and prepare for manual recovery if the firewall enters maintenance mode. No official mitigation or workaround has been published at this time.
