AI-suggested

A fix is available and included in updated Linux Azure kernel versions. The kernel now requires seeding the RNG with 256 bits from RDRAND at boot and will panic if this fails, preventing insecure operation. Users should update to the fixed kernel versions and reboot to apply the patch.

Description

A vulnerability in the Linux kernel for Azure CoCo systems involves the RNG seeding process relying solely on the CPU's RDRAND instruction. Because the CoCo threat model assumes an untrusted VM host that can manipulate inputs, RDRAND is the only entropy source at boot. If RDRAND is broken or unavailable, the RNG seeding fails, causing the system to panic to prevent insecure operation. This issue affects certain Linux Azure kernel versions and has been addressed by requiring RDRAND seeding at boot time.
