Published: Wed May 22 2024 (05/22/2024, 05:32:47 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: daveshine
Product: Toolbar Extras for Elementor & More – WordPress Admin Bar Enhanced

Description

The Toolbar Extras for Elementor & More – WordPress Admin Bar Enhanced plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the plugin's 'tbex-version' shortcode in all versions up to, and including, 1.4.9 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping on user supplied attributes. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with contributor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2024-3611 is a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability in the Toolbar Extras for Elementor & More – WordPress Admin Bar Enhanced WordPress plugin. The flaw exists in the 'tbex-version' shortcode due to improper neutralization of input during web page generation, allowing authenticated contributors and above to inject malicious scripts. These scripts execute in the context of users viewing the injected pages, potentially leading to session hijacking or other script-based attacks. The vulnerability affects all versions up to and including 1.4.9. No vendor advisory or patch information is provided in the available data.

Potential Impact

An attacker with contributor-level or higher privileges can inject persistent malicious scripts into pages via the vulnerable shortcode. These scripts execute in the browsers of users who access the compromised pages, potentially leading to information disclosure or session hijacking. The vulnerability does not affect availability but impacts confidentiality and integrity to a limited extent. The CVSS score of 6.4 reflects a medium severity level with network attack vector, low attack complexity, and no user interaction required.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, restrict contributor-level access to trusted users only and consider disabling or removing the affected plugin to mitigate risk. Monitor for updates from the plugin vendor or WordPress plugin repository for a security patch.
