VulnerabilityCVE-2024-3747cvecve-2024-3747cwe-20
Published: Thu May 02 2024 (05/02/2024, 16:52:47 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: creativethemeshq
Product: Blocksy

Description

The Blocksy theme for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the className parameter in the About Me block in all versions up to, and including, 2.0.39 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with contributor access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2024-3747 is a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability in the Blocksy WordPress theme (creativethemeshq) affecting all versions up to and including 2.0.39. The flaw is due to improper input validation (CWE-20) on the className parameter within the About Me block, enabling authenticated users with contributor-level access or higher to inject arbitrary web scripts. These scripts persist and execute in the context of any user accessing the injected page, potentially leading to session hijacking or other script-based attacks. The vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 6.4 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N), reflecting network attack vector, low attack complexity, required privileges, no user interaction, scope change, and limited confidentiality and integrity impact without availability impact.

Potential Impact

An authenticated attacker with contributor or higher privileges can inject persistent malicious scripts into pages via the vulnerable className parameter. When other users access these pages, the injected scripts execute in their browsers, potentially compromising user sessions or performing unauthorized actions within the context of the site. The impact affects confidentiality and integrity but does not affect availability. The vulnerability requires authenticated access and has medium severity.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, restrict contributor-level access to trusted users only. Consider disabling or limiting use of the About Me block if feasible. Monitor for updates from the Blocksy theme vendor or WordPress security channels for patches addressing this vulnerability.
