AI-suggested

A patch is available and has been applied in multiple Linux kernel releases including 4.4.0-1137.143, 4.15.0-1182.197~14.04.1, and others as listed. Users and administrators should update affected Linux kernel versions to these fixed releases or later to remediate this vulnerability. No additional mitigation is required beyond applying the official kernel updates.

Description

CVE-2024-38630 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's cpu5wdt watchdog driver. The flaw occurs when the timer handler cpu5wdt_trigger accesses a port region after it has been released, due to improper synchronization when removing the cpu5wdt module. This can lead to memory corruption and potentially arbitrary code execution or system crash. The issue is fixed by replacing del_timer() with timer_shutdown_sync() to ensure the timer handler finishes before releasing the port region. Multiple Linux kernel versions, including linux-aws, are affected and have received patches.
