AI-suggested
A patch is available and included in fixed Linux kernel versions such as 4.4.0-1135.141 and 4.15.0-1180.195~14.04.1 among others. Users should update their Linux kernel to these or later versions to remediate the vulnerability. After updating, a system reboot is required. Due to ABI changes, third-party kernel modules must be recompiled and reinstalled. No additional mitigations are necessary beyond applying the official updates.
Description
CVE-2024-39292 is a race condition vulnerability in the Linux kernel's User-Mode Linux (UML) subsystem. The flaw occurs because a winch interrupt request (IRQ) can be registered before the winch is added to the winch_handlers list, potentially leading to a panic due to use-after-free during cleanup. This issue has been fixed by ensuring the winch is added to the list before registering the IRQ and rolling back if IRQ registration fails. Multiple Linux kernel versions, including linux-aws variants, are affected. A patch is available and included in updated kernel releases.
