A patch is available and should be applied by upgrading to the fixed Linux kernel versions listed in the advisory, such as 5.4.0-1082.87~18.04.1 and later. The vendor advisory from Ubuntu confirms the availability of fixes. Systems running affected kernel versions should update promptly to mitigate this vulnerability. No additional mitigation steps are indicated beyond applying the official patches.

Description

CVE-2024-42292 is a high-severity vulnerability in the Linux kernel's kobject_uevent subsystem where the zap_modalias_env() function incorrectly calculates the size of a memory block to move. This causes an out-of-bounds (OOB) memory access if the MODALIAS variable is not the last entry in the environment parameter. The issue has been fixed by correcting the size calculation used in memmove. Multiple Linux kernel versions, including various 4.11.x, 4.13.x, and 5.4.x builds for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, are affected. A patch is available in fixed kernel versions starting from 5.4.0-1082.87~18.04.1 and others. The vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 score of 7.1, indicating high severity, with potential impact including local privilege escalation and denial of service. No known exploits in the wild have been reported.
