A patch is available and has been released in multiple Linux kernel versions including 5.4.0-1135.145~18.04.1 and later. Users and administrators should update affected Linux kernel versions to these fixed releases to remediate the vulnerability. No additional mitigation is required beyond applying the official kernel updates.
Description
CVE-2024-44946 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's Kernel Connection Multiplexor (KCM) sockets driver. The flaw occurs due to concurrent access to the same socket in kcm_sendmsg(), leading to a double-free of socket buffers (skb) in kcm_release(). This was detected by syzkaller and fixed by serializing kcm_sendmsg() calls with a per-socket mutex. The vulnerability affects multiple Linux kernel versions prior to fixed releases in the 5.4 and 5.15 series.
