A patch is available and has been released in multiple Linux kernel 5.15.x versions, including 5.15.0-1073.79 and later. Users and administrators should update their Linux kernels to these fixed versions or later to remediate this vulnerability. No additional mitigation is required beyond applying the official kernel updates.
Description
CVE-2024-49863 is a null pointer dereference vulnerability in the vhost/scsi subsystem of the Linux kernel. It occurs in the function vhost_scsi_get_req() when handling certain SCSI AN requests from a guest, leading to a crash of the vhost_worker process and indefinite occupation of the target port group. This flaw was introduced since commit 3f8ca2e115e5 and affects multiple Linux kernel versions prior to 5.15.0-1073.79 and related builds. The issue has been patched in several 5.15 kernel releases. The vulnerability has a medium severity score and does not impact confidentiality or integrity but causes denial of service by crashing kernel processes.
