A patch is available and should be applied. Fixed kernel versions include 4.4.0-1149.155, 4.15.0-1194.209~14.04.1, 4.4.0-274.308~14.04.1, 4.4.0-274.308, 4.4.0-1187.202, and others as listed in the established facts. Users and administrators should update to these fixed versions to remediate the vulnerability. No additional mitigation is required beyond applying the official kernel updates.

Description

CVE-2024-50006 is a medium severity vulnerability in the Linux kernel's ext4 filesystem code. It involves an incorrect unlock order of the i_data_sem semaphore in the ext4_ind_migrate() function, which can cause a deadlock under specific conditions when CONFIG_PROVE_LOCKING is enabled. The deadlock arises due to a race condition between the EXT4_IOC_MIGRATE ioctl with synchronous updates and concurrent write system calls. This flaw was discovered through fuzzing and has been fixed in multiple Linux kernel versions.
