What to do

AI-suggested

A fix for this vulnerability is available in the Linux kernel by correcting the pgoff alignment in dax_set_mapping() to use ALIGN_DOWN(). Users should apply the official kernel updates that include this correction. Since this is a kernel-level fix, upgrading to a patched kernel version is the recommended mitigation. No additional actions are required if the system is running a fixed kernel version.

Description

CVE-2024-50022 addresses a vulnerability in the Linux kernel's device-dax subsystem where the page offset (pgoff) alignment in the dax_set_mapping() function was incorrect. The issue involved using ALIGN() instead of ALIGN_DOWN(), causing misalignment of vmf->address to fault_size. This misalignment could lead to incorrect memory failure addresses being reported, resulting in endless machine check exceptions (MCE) and system panic during error injection scenarios. The flaw is subtle and typically only triggered in specific error conditions involving unpinned device-dax regions with non-aligned addresses. The vulnerability has been resolved by correcting the alignment method.
