CVE-2024-50022 is a vulnerability in the Linux kernel's device-dax subsystem where the page offset (pgoff) alignment in the dax_set_mapping() function was incorrect. The issue arises because pgoff was aligned using ALIGN() instead of ALIGN_DOWN(), causing the vmf->address to be aligned incorrectly to the next alignment boundary rather than downwards. This misalignment can lead to memory failure addresses being reported incorrectly, which in turn can cause endless machine check exceptions (MCE) and system panic during error recovery. The problem is subtle and typically only observable during specific error injection scenarios on device-dax regions that are not pinned to their alignment boundaries. The vulnerability has a medium severity with a CVSS score of 5.5 and impacts system availability due to potential kernel panics.
