What to do

AI-suggested

The vulnerability is mitigated by the Linux kernel rejecting attempts to place uprobes on LDR (literal) and LDRSW (literal) instructions. No further action is required by users or administrators as the kernel enforces this restriction. Future support for these instructions with uprobes may be introduced after more significant development work.

Description

CVE-2024-50099 addresses a vulnerability in the Linux kernel's arm64 architecture related to uprobes support for LDR (literal) and LDRSW (literal) instructions. The existing simulate_ldr_literal() and simulate_ldrsw_literal() functions, originally designed for kprobes, are unsafe for uprobes due to their use of plain C memory accesses without proper fault handling and incompatibility with hardware and software PAN. This can lead to kernel thread termination and potential system instability. The vulnerability is mitigated by disallowing uprobes on these instructions, rejecting such attempts to prevent unsafe behavior.
