Published: Fri Jun 14 2024 (06/14/2024, 06:53:28 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: wpgmaps
Product: WP Go Maps (formerly WP Google Maps)

Description

The WP Go Maps (formerly WP Google Maps) plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via Custom JS option in versions up to, and including, 9.0.38. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers that have been explicitly granted permissions by an administrator, with contributor-level permissions and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Version 9.0.39 adds a caution to make administrators aware of the possibility for abuse if permissions are granted to lower-level users.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2024-5994 is a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability in the WP Go Maps WordPress plugin, affecting versions up to and including 9.0.38. The issue arises from improper neutralization of input in the Custom JS option, allowing authenticated users with contributor-level or higher permissions to inject malicious scripts. These scripts execute in the context of users viewing the injected pages, potentially leading to information disclosure or session hijacking. The vulnerability is addressed in version 9.0.39 by adding an administrative caution regarding permission assignments, but no explicit patch or fix is documented in the provided data.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows authenticated users with contributor-level or higher permissions to inject and execute arbitrary JavaScript in the context of other users viewing the affected pages. This can lead to limited confidentiality and integrity impacts, such as theft of session tokens or manipulation of page content. There is no indication of availability impact or known active exploitation in the wild. The CVSS score of 6.4 reflects a medium severity level.

Mitigation Recommendations

Version 9.0.39 adds a caution to administrators about the risks of granting permissions to lower-level users, but no explicit patch or fix is confirmed in the provided data. Administrators should carefully review and restrict permissions granted to contributors or lower-level users to prevent abuse of the Custom JS option. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance.
