Technical Analysis

The LearnPress WordPress LMS Plugin suffers from a missing capability check in its 'register' function, allowing unauthorized user registration. Specifically, unauthenticated attackers can bypass the intended disabled user registration setting to create new accounts with default roles. This vulnerability affects all versions up to and including 4.2.6.8.1. The CVSS 3.1 score of 5.3 reflects a network attack vector with low attack complexity, no privileges required, and no user interaction needed. The vulnerability is tracked as CWE-862, indicating a missing authorization control.

Potential Impact

An attacker can create new user accounts on a vulnerable LearnPress installation despite user registration being disabled, potentially enabling unauthorized access or further attacks depending on the default user role permissions. The impact is limited to confidentiality as the attacker gains an account but does not directly affect integrity or availability. No known exploits are reported in the wild at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, administrators should consider disabling or restricting access to the registration functionality via other means, such as web application firewall rules or custom code, to prevent unauthorized account creation. Monitor vendor channels for updates and apply patches promptly once released.
