Technical Analysis

CVE-2024-9187 describes a missing authorization vulnerability in the Read more By Adam WordPress plugin affecting all versions up to 1.1.8. The deleteRm() function lacks a capability check, enabling authenticated users with low privileges (Subscriber and above) to delete 'read more' buttons. This improper access control issue is categorized under CWE-862 and results in unauthorized modification of plugin content elements. The CVSS 3.1 score of 4.3 reflects a network attack vector with low privileges required and no user interaction needed, causing limited integrity impact without confidentiality or availability loss.

Potential Impact

Authenticated users with Subscriber-level access or higher can delete 'read more' buttons in the plugin, leading to unauthorized modification of site content elements. There is no direct impact on confidentiality or availability reported. The integrity of the affected plugin's content presentation is compromised.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, restrict user roles to trusted users only and monitor for unauthorized changes to 'read more' buttons. Avoid granting Subscriber or higher privileges to untrusted users. Follow updates from the plugin vendor for a security patch.
