Technical Analysis

The Download Manager plugin for WordPress (codename065) suffers from a CWE-22 directory traversal vulnerability allowing authenticated users with Author-level access or higher to overwrite files outside the designated directory through the 'wpdm_newfile' action. This improper validation of file paths can result in denial of service by overwriting critical files. The issue affects all versions up to and including 3.3.08. The vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 5.4 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:L). No patch or remediation details are provided in the available data.

Potential Impact

An attacker with Author-level or higher privileges can overwrite select file types outside the intended directory, potentially causing denial of service. There is no indication of confidentiality or availability impact beyond denial of service, and no known exploits have been reported in the wild.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, restrict Author-level access to trusted users only and monitor for suspicious activity related to file uploads or modifications via the 'wpdm_newfile' action.
