A patch is available and has been incorporated in Linux kernel versions 5.15.0-1097.100 and later, as well as other fixed versions listed. Users and administrators should update to these fixed kernel versions to remediate the vulnerability. No additional mitigation steps are required beyond applying the official kernel updates.
Description
CVE-2025-22111 is a medium severity vulnerability in the Linux kernel related to the handling of network bridge interface ioctl calls SIOCBRADDIF and SIOCBRDELIF. The flaw involves an unnecessary RTNL (rtnetlink) lock dance that can cause a race condition and a kernel crash (splat) under RTNL pressure when concurrent threads manipulate bridge devices. The issue arises because dev_ioctl() increments a device's reference count and releases the RTNL lock, while a concurrent thread may remove the bridge device, leading to a deadlock and crash. The fix removes the redundant dev_ioctl() call for these ioctl commands, moving certain checks earlier to avoid blocking and race conditions. This vulnerability affects multiple Linux kernel versions prior to fixed releases in the 5.15.0 series and some older versions. A patch is available and included in updated Linux kernel packages.
