Published: Thu Mar 20 2025 (03/20/2025, 11:11:26 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: thomstark
Product: File Away

Description

The File Away plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to unauthorized access of data due to a missing capability check on the ajax() function in all versions up to, and including, 3.9.9.0.1. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers, leveraging the use of a reversible weak algorithm, to read the contents of arbitrary files on the server, which can contain sensitive information.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2025-2539 is a vulnerability in the File Away WordPress plugin caused by the absence of an authorization check on the ajax() function. This flaw permits unauthenticated attackers to access arbitrary files on the server. The issue is compounded by the use of a broken or risky cryptographic algorithm (CWE-327), which is reversible and weak, enabling attackers to decrypt sensitive data. The vulnerability affects all versions up to and including 3.9.9.0.1. No patch or official fix has been indicated in the available data.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to read sensitive files on the server, potentially exposing confidential information. The use of a weak reversible cryptographic algorithm increases the risk by allowing attackers to decrypt protected data. The vulnerability does not impact integrity or availability but results in a high confidentiality impact.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, restrict access to the vulnerable plugin and consider disabling or removing it if possible. Monitor official channels from the vendor thomstark and WordPress for updates or patches addressing this vulnerability.
