Technical Analysis

The CGM CLININET application uses unsalted MD5 hashes to store user passwords, which is a cryptographic weakness classified under CWE-916 (Use of Password Hash With Insufficient Computational Effort). This weak hashing approach makes password hashes more susceptible to offline brute-force or precomputed hash attacks. The issue was fixed in versions 2026.MS1 and 2026.MS3 of CGM CLININET.

Potential Impact

The use of unsalted MD5 hashes for password storage significantly weakens password security, increasing the risk that attackers could recover user passwords if they obtain the hash database. This can lead to unauthorized access to user accounts. However, there are no known exploits in the wild at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available and has been released in CGM CLININET versions 2026.MS1 and 2026.MS3. Users should upgrade to these versions or later to remediate this vulnerability.
