AI-suggested
A patch is available and has been released in multiple Linux kernel versions, including several 5.15.x builds as listed in the established facts. Users should apply the official kernel updates provided by their Linux distribution, such as those from Ubuntu's USN-8033-1 advisory, and reboot the system to ensure the fix is applied. No additional mitigation steps are required beyond applying the official patches.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's i40e driver was fixed by correcting the validation of Virtual Function (VF) states when allocating resources. The previous logic incorrectly used the VF state I40E_VF_STATE_ACTIVE as the sole indicator of an active VF, which was insufficient. The fix uses the state I40E_VF_STATE_RESOURCES_LOADED to more accurately determine resource allocation eligibility. This issue affects multiple Linux kernel versions prior to specific fixed releases and has a high severity CVSS score of 8.8.
