AI-suggested

A patch is available and should be applied to affected linux-azure kernel versions. The Ubuntu security advisory USN-8029-1 confirms that this and other Linux kernel vulnerabilities have been fixed. Systems running the affected versions should be updated to the fixed kernel releases to remediate this issue.

Description

A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's CIFS module related to parsing DFS referrals could allow a malicious SMB server to cause an out-of-bounds (OOB) condition by sending malformed input. This occurs when the server sends an invalid reply to FSCTL_DFS_GET_REFERRALS with a reply smaller than the expected structure size or with inconsistent referral counts. The issue has been resolved by returning an error on such malformed replies to prevent OOB access.
