Technical Analysis

The Balbooa Forms extension for Joomla processes JSON arrays per upload field during form submission, verifying only that IDs are numeric. However, it directly trusts client-supplied filenames and display names without sufficient validation. This improper limitation of pathname handling (CWE-22) and metadata handling (CWE-73) can allow attackers to perform path traversal attacks and tamper with file metadata, potentially affecting other users' sessions or data.

Potential Impact

An attacker can exploit this vulnerability to perform path traversal, potentially accessing or modifying files outside the intended directories. Metadata tampering and cross-session claiming risks may allow unauthorized manipulation of form submission data or files. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 6.9 (medium severity), indicating a significant but not critical impact.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or vendor advisory is currently available. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is released, users should consider restricting file upload permissions and monitoring for suspicious activity related to file uploads in Balbooa Forms.
