Published: 09/28/2026 (09/28/2026, 20:50:59 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: juliangruber
Product: brace-expansion

Description

The brace-expansion library versions prior to 1.1.19, 2.1.5, 3.0.7, and 5.0.10 contain a vulnerability where crafted brace patterns can exhaust the native stack during parsing. This occurs because the parseCommaParts function recursively processes brace groups and uses push.apply with very large arrays, leading to stack exhaustion and potential Node.js process termination. This results in a denial of service condition. The issue is fixed in the specified versions.

Technical Analysis

The brace-expansion library generates strings from brace patterns with common prefixes and suffixes. In affected versions, the parseCommaParts function recursively processes the remainder of the pattern once per brace group and uses push.apply to pass every element of a large comma-part array as function arguments. Patterns with many comma-separated brace groups trigger recursive and argument-array native stack exhaustion before output limits can be applied, causing process termination. This uncontrolled resource consumption vulnerability is addressed in versions 1.1.19, 2.1.5, 3.0.7, and 5.0.10.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability can cause the Node.js process using the brace-expansion library to terminate unexpectedly due to native stack exhaustion. This results in a denial of service condition with no impact on confidentiality or integrity.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade the brace-expansion library to version 1.1.19, 2.1.5, 3.0.7, or 5.0.10 or later, depending on the major version in use. These versions contain fixes that prevent native stack exhaustion during brace pattern parsing.
