CVE-2026-69152: CWE-400: Uncontrolled Resource Consumption in juliangruber brace-expansion

High
Published: 08/03/2026 (08/03/2026, 16:33:36 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: juliangruber
Product: brace-expansion

Description

The brace-expansion library generates arbitrary strings containing a common prefix and suffix. Prior to 1.1.18, 2.1.4, 3.0.6, and 5.0.9, expand() does not apply maxLength while constructing comma-alternative intermediate arrays or padded sequences, allowing attacker-controlled input to exhaust memory or block the event loop. The fix for CVE-2026-14257 is bypassed by the vulnerability. This issue is fixed in versions 1.1.18, 2.1.4, 3.0.6, and 5.0.9.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-69152 affects the juliangruber brace-expansion library where the expand() function fails to apply the maxLength constraint during the construction of comma-alternative intermediate arrays or padded sequences. This flaw allows an attacker to supply crafted input that can cause excessive memory consumption or event loop blocking, leading to denial of service conditions. The vulnerability bypasses the fix implemented for CVE-2026-14257. The issue is resolved in brace-expansion versions 1.1.18, 2.1.4, 3.0.6, and 5.0.9.

Potential Impact

An attacker can exploit this vulnerability to cause uncontrolled resource consumption, resulting in memory exhaustion or blocking the event loop. This leads to denial of service (DoS) conditions in applications using vulnerable versions of the brace-expansion library. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity reported.

Mitigation Recommendations

This vulnerability is fixed in brace-expansion versions 1.1.18, 2.1.4, 3.0.6, and 5.0.9. Users should upgrade to one of these versions or later to remediate the issue. Patch status is not explicitly confirmed by a vendor advisory but the description states these versions contain the fix. Until upgraded, applications remain vulnerable.
