Published: 09/30/2026 (09/30/2026, 19:57:37 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: py-pdf
Product: pypdf

Description

pypdf is a free and open-source pure-python PDF library. Prior to 6.18.0, a crafted PDF containing indirect-object identifiers or generation-number tokens that continue for a long time without whitespace can cause pypdf/_reader.py and pypdf/generic/_base.py to scan excessive input through read_until_whitespace, resulting in long runtimes and application unavailability. This issue is fixed in version 6.18.0.

Technical Analysis

The pypdf library versions before 6.18.0 are vulnerable to uncontrolled resource consumption (CWE-400) due to crafted PDF files that contain indirect-object identifiers or generation-number tokens that continue for a long time without whitespace. This causes the functions read_until_whitespace in pypdf/_reader.py and pypdf/generic/_base.py to scan excessive input, resulting in prolonged processing times and potential denial of service through application unavailability. The vulnerability is addressed in version 6.18.0.

Potential Impact

An attacker can cause the pypdf library to consume excessive CPU resources by providing a specially crafted PDF file, leading to long runtimes and potential application unavailability. This constitutes a denial-of-service condition. There is no indication of privilege escalation or data compromise from the provided data.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade to pypdf version 6.18.0 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. No additional mitigation is required once the update is applied.
