Description

CVE-2026-104970 is a race condition vulnerability in the open-source project management tool Plane. Versions from 0.13 up to but not including 1.4.0 allow concurrent unauthenticated requests to bypass proper synchronization when creating the first instance administrator account. This can result in multiple users gaining unrestricted instance-admin authority. The issue is fixed in version 1.4.0.

Technical Analysis

Plane's InstanceAdminSignUpEndpoint uses InstanceAdmin.objects.first() to check for the existence of an instance administrator and then creates an account without atomic transactions, row locks, uniqueness guards, or advisory locks. This improper synchronization allows two concurrent unauthenticated requests with different emails to both observe no existing admin and create separate User and InstanceAdmin records, each receiving instance-admin sessions. This race condition leads to unauthorized privilege escalation. The vulnerability is resolved in Plane version 1.4.0.

Potential Impact

An attacker can exploit this race condition to create multiple instance administrator accounts without authentication, effectively gaining unrestricted administrative control over the Plane instance. This compromises confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the system as indicated by the CVSS vector (C:H/I:H/A:H).

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade Plane to version 1.4.0 or later, where this race condition vulnerability is fixed. Until then, no effective workaround is documented. Patch status is confirmed fixed in 1.4.0.
