Description

A validation issue in Ghost CMS versions from 6.0.9 up to but not including 6.65.0 allowed unauthenticated users to abuse certain functionality, such as Webmentions, to make limited HTTP requests to hosts within the Ghost server's internal network on some network configurations. Technical Analysis

Ghost, a Node.js content management system, contained a validation flaw in versions >=6.0.9 and <6.65.0 that permitted unauthenticated users to leverage features like Webmentions to perform limited HTTP requests to internal network hosts of the Ghost server under certain network configurations. The flaw is categorized under CWE-184 (Incomplete List of Disallowed Inputs) and CWE-918 (Server-Side Request Forgery). Although the attacker can initiate requests, no response data is returned, limiting the impact. The vulnerability was addressed and fixed in Ghost version 6.65.0.

Potential Impact

An unauthenticated attacker can cause the Ghost server to make HTTP requests to internal network hosts, potentially enabling limited internal network reconnaissance or interaction. However, no response data is returned to the attacker, reducing the severity of the impact. There is no indication of data disclosure, integrity loss, or denial of service from this vulnerability.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade Ghost to version 6.65.0 or later, where this validation issue has been fixed. No other mitigation steps are indicated or required.
