CVE-2026-107333: CWE-863 Incorrect Authorization in CISA Malcolm

High
Published: 10/08/2026 (10/08/2026, 18:32:29 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: CISA
Product: Malcolm

Description

Malcolm's nginx based reverse proxy contains a URL path normalization inconsistency between its Lua based role-based access control (RBAC) authorization layer and nginx's own request routing logic. An authenticated user can craft a specially formatted request path to bypass role-based restrictions and reach administrative or role gated endpoints they should not have access to. This affects all restricted paths protected by the RBAC authorization layer, including file upload, PHP server, htadmin, and authentication management interfaces.

Technical Analysis

Malcolm's reverse proxy uses nginx with a Lua-based RBAC authorization layer. Due to inconsistent URL path normalization between these components, an authenticated user can bypass role-based restrictions by crafting specially formatted request paths. This vulnerability affects all restricted paths protected by the RBAC layer, enabling unauthorized access to administrative and role-gated endpoints.

Potential Impact

An authenticated user with limited privileges can bypass role-based access controls to access sensitive administrative interfaces and restricted endpoints. This can lead to unauthorized disclosure and modification of sensitive data, as well as potential unauthorized administrative actions. The CVSS 3.1 score is 8.1 (high), reflecting high confidentiality and integrity impacts without availability impact.

Mitigation Recommendations

No patch or official fix information is provided in the available data. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, restrict access to the Malcolm reverse proxy to trusted users and networks, and monitor for suspicious activity related to crafted request paths targeting restricted endpoints.
