CVE-2026-107818: CWE-15: External Control of System or Configuration Setting in MariaDB server
Description
CVE-2026-107818 is a high-severity vulnerability in MariaDB server affecting multiple versions from 10.6.1 up to but not including 10.6.28, 10.11.19, 11.4.13, 11.8.9, 12.3.3, and 13.0.2. It involves external control of system or configuration settings via the mariadb.service unit using the /run/mysqld/wsrep-new-cluster file during service restart. A database user with FILE privilege and appropriate secure-file-priv configuration could exploit this to inject attacker-controlled environment variables. The issue is fixed in the specified versions.

Technical Analysis
MariaDB server versions from 10.6.1 until fixed versions (10.6.28, 10.11.19, 11.4.13, 11.8.9, 12.3.3, and 13.0.2) contain a vulnerability where the mariadb.service unit uses the /run/mysqld/wsrep-new-cluster file during service restart. A database user with FILE privilege and secure-file-priv configured to allow writes to /run/mysqld could create this file and inject environment variables that influence the restarted service's configuration. This constitutes external control of system or configuration settings (CWE-15). The vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 score of 8.4, indicating high severity with network attack vector, low attack complexity, high privileges required, user interaction required, scope changed, and high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The issue is fixed in versions 10.6.28, 10.11.19, 11.4.13, 11.8.9, 12.3.3, and 13.0.2.
Potential Impact
An attacker with FILE privilege and the ability to write to /run/mysqld could inject environment variables into the MariaDB service restart process, potentially leading to full compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the database server. This could allow unauthorized control over system or configuration settings, impacting the overall security of the MariaDB server environment.
Mitigation Recommendations
This vulnerability is fixed in MariaDB server versions 10.6.28, 10.11.19, 11.4.13, 11.8.9, 12.3.3, and 13.0.2. Users should upgrade to these or later versions to remediate the issue. No additional mitigations are specified by the vendor advisory.
