Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: GitoxideLabs
Product: gix-pack

Description

CVE-2026-109349 is a reachable assertion vulnerability in GitoxideLabs gix-pack versions before 0.75.0. The issue arises because the pack header decoder accepts version 3, but an assertion in the code requires version 2, causing a panic when a malicious remote sends a version 3 pack header. This can abort clone or fetch operations.

Technical Analysis

GitoxideLabs gix-pack before version 0.75.0 contains a reachable assertion in the BytesToEntriesIter::new_from_header function. The vulnerability occurs because the pack header decoder accepts pack version 3, but a release-enabled assertion (assert_eq!) requires the version to be 2. A malicious remote can exploit this by sending a 12-byte pack header declaring version 3, triggering the assertion and causing the client to panic and abort the clone or fetch process.

Potential Impact

An attacker controlling a remote Git server can cause the client using vulnerable gix-pack versions to panic and abort clone or fetch operations. This results in a denial of service condition for users attempting to interact with the malicious repository. There is no indication of code execution or data corruption beyond the denial of service.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade gix-pack to version 0.75.0 or later, where this assertion issue is resolved. Patch status is confirmed by the versioning information indicating the fix is in 0.75.0. Until upgrading, avoid interacting with untrusted or malicious Git remotes that could exploit this vulnerability.
