CVE-2026-109360: Deserialization of Untrusted Data in Project-MONAI MONAI

Published: 10/12/2026 (10/12/2026, 18:31:53 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Project-MONAI
Product: MONAI

Description

MONAI versions from 0.4.0 up to but not including 1.6.1 contain a remote code execution vulnerability. This flaw arises because SENet pretrained weights are fetched over plaintext HTTP, allowing attackers to tamper with the .pth files. The vulnerability occurs when load_state_dict_from_url unpickles these files without the weights_only=True parameter, enabling execution of arbitrary code during model construction with pretrained=True.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-109360 affects Project-MONAI MONAI versions >=0.4.0 and <1.6.1. The vulnerability is a deserialization of untrusted data issue leading to remote code execution. Attackers on the network path can intercept and modify SENet pretrained weights downloaded over unencrypted HTTP. The load_state_dict_from_url function unpickles the .pth file without restricting to weights_only=True, allowing execution of malicious code embedded in the crafted file when SEResNet50 or other SENet models are instantiated with pretrained=True.

Potential Impact

An attacker capable of intercepting network traffic can execute arbitrary code on the system running vulnerable MONAI versions by substituting malicious pretrained weight files. This can lead to full system compromise or unauthorized actions within the environment where MONAI is used.

Mitigation Recommendations

Users should upgrade MONAI to version 1.6.1 or later where this vulnerability is fixed. Until then, avoid using pretrained SENet models with pretrained=True or ensure that weight files are fetched over secure channels and verified before loading. Patch status is confirmed fixed in version 1.6.1.
