CVE-2026-109361: Deserialization of Untrusted Data in Project-MONAI MONAI

Published: 10/12/2026 (10/12/2026, 18:31:53 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Project-MONAI
Product: MONAI

Description

MONAI 1.2.0 before 1.6.1 contains an insecure deserialization vulnerability in nnUNetV2Runner that unpickles the postprocessing_file path read from inference_information.json without confining it to the results directory. Attackers who can modify inference_information.json can point it at a malicious pickle elsewhere on the filesystem to execute code when predict_ensemble_postprocessing runs.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in Project-MONAI's MONAI software affects versions from 1.2.0 up to but not including 1.6.1. It arises from insecure deserialization in the nnUNetV2Runner, where the postprocessing_file path read from inference_information.json is unpickled without confinement to the results directory. An attacker with the ability to alter inference_information.json can specify a malicious pickle file located elsewhere on the filesystem, leading to arbitrary code execution when the predict_ensemble_postprocessing function runs.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an attacker with write access to inference_information.json to execute arbitrary code on the system running MONAI. This can lead to full compromise of the affected environment. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 7, indicating a high severity vulnerability with local attack vector, low attack complexity, and requiring low privileges but user interaction.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in MONAI version 1.6.1 and later. Users should upgrade to version 1.6.1 or newer to remediate this vulnerability. Until then, restrict write access to inference_information.json and avoid running untrusted inference jobs. Patch status is confirmed by the affectedVersions field indicating versions before 1.6.1 are vulnerable.
