Published: 10/14/2026 (10/14/2026, 15:01:27 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: sahlberg
Product: libsmb2

Description

libsmb2 through 6.2 contains a heap out-of-bounds read vulnerability in smb2_decode_file_all_info that allows malicious SMB servers to crash clients by sending an unchecked FileNameLength. Attackers controlling the server or performing man-in-the-middle on unsigned sessions can return crafted FileAllInformation replies to smb2_stat or smb2_fstat calls, crashing the client.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in libsmb2 (versions up to 6.2) is a heap out-of-bounds read triggered by improper validation of the FileNameLength field within the smb2_decode_file_all_info function. This flaw allows a malicious SMB server or an attacker intercepting unsigned SMB sessions to send specially crafted FileAllInformation replies in response to smb2_stat or smb2_fstat calls, resulting in client application crashes due to memory access violations.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation leads to client crashes, causing denial of service. The vulnerability requires either control of the SMB server or a man-in-the-middle position on unsigned SMB sessions. There is no indication of code execution or data disclosure from the provided data.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a patch is available, avoid connecting to untrusted SMB servers and use SMB signing or encryption to prevent man-in-the-middle attacks on unsigned sessions.
